Reggio children

Reggio Emilia 2012, 2nd prize

Reggio Children is a revolutionary approach in educational systems. During 50 years since its founder Loris Malaguzzi started in public nursery schools in Reggio Emilia, the didactic method spread worlwide bringing thousands of children to a wider point of view to learning. Now the method is facing the ambition to expand to primary schools its approach. For that reason the Reggio Children Foundation selected seven international architectural studios for a restricted competition, with the aim to design the new prototype for a revolutionary primary school in the city of Reggio Emilia. Among other invited studios: Giancarlo Mazzanti Arquitectos (Bogota), Raumlabor (Berlin), Ecosistema Urbano (Madrid).
The new school will rise within the Cultural Center Loris Malaguzzi, an internaitonal center dedicated to transmission and research about didactics and education, in extension to the exhisting nursey school. The concept proposed is trying to realize a school oriented to the public space, relating the rooms for didactics to a wider open area. A complex ground is creating the stage for actions in continuity between inside and outside, below a wide structure wich inhables the whole area to the installation of special features to control the exposure to weather, to install renewable energy equipments, and to improve the performance of several actions in the outdoor space.
