PADIGLIONE INFANZIA

Competition, Milano, 2014

The new pavilion emerges from the garden.
It is organized as a layering of different elements: a permeable base, a volume with openings, and an equipped roof. The building synthesizes, across three levels, the fundamental moments of the experience with the child: play, relationship, and discovery. The ground floor consists of a sequence of rooms dedicated to educational and play activities. Each space is directly connected to the garden, and every room can relate to all the others.
The upper level is dedicated to moments of interaction between parents, staff, and the community. This space houses areas designed for training and study. The roof is a terrace from which to observe the city and take part in its transformations. From here, the context is recognized, and the relationship with it is interpreted.

The rooms on the ground floor exist in continuity with the garden.
The spaces are divided by three walls laid out on the ground, arranged in sequence along one of the axes of the park that penetrates the site.
This gives rise to a sequence of spaces dedicated to children’s play. Each room is both self-contained and at the same time opens out into the park.

On the first level, an introverted volume contains all the rooms.
Through carefully placed openings, views of the surrounding landscape are framed from within.
Two service bands organize the space into three different zones: a central, public one; one dedicated to the study center and library; and one dedicated to offices, which faces a private patio.

The roof is a garden roof — a privileged observation point and an additional space for activities.
On the roof, like on a tray, a selection of objects is arranged.
Colored volumes made from different materials create an artificial garden and resonate with the surrounding landscape.
